Member Biography - Richard Kappes
When Rich and his close friend Joe Sullivan joined 1st Bassmasters half way
through the 2003 season, it was his first foray into the world of tournament
fishing. Having fished all of his life, Rich spent a lot of time on Mohican Lake
with his Dad & Grandfather at their summer house. He enjoyed fishing for bass on
the Rio Reservoir and Basher Kill from his Coleman row boat, and fished Swinging
Bridge from his Tracker. Rich also enjoyed fishing for both Trout & Bass on the
Delaware River & Roundout Reservoir. He had also spent a few seasons Salmon
fishing with positive results. Additionally, Rich was an avid Deer & Turkey
hunter.In 2004 Rich doubled his Rookie year totals, and fished with the clubıs 6
Man State Team on Cayuga Lake as an alternate, weighing in the 3rd highest total
for the team with 14.47lbs.
On July 17th 2005, during Richıs 2nd full season fishing tournaments, he took
1st place on Lake Champlain while fishing a NYS BASS Chapter Federation Points
event. His winning total of 16lbs 8ozs included a 5lb Largemouth. Additionally,
he won the event fishing as a non-boater.
As pleased as he was with this impressive win, he still looked forward to
winning his first Club event. On October 23rd 2005, the Hudson River was the
last club event of the season, and Rich got his first victory at a Club event.
Little did we know that it would also be the last Club event Rich would fish
with us.
On May 2nd, 2006, Richard Kappes passed away at the age of 44. He is survived by
his wife, and two young sons. Rich was a good club-mate and friend, who will be
sorely missed.
In memory of Rich, our annual Club Open has been renamed ³The Richard Kappes
Memorial Open and will no longer move from one body of water to another each
year. From now on the club Open will always be our last event of the season,
taking place in October, on the Hudson, to commemorate Rich's last event with
us.
