1st Bassmasters of Sullivan Co. NY fished it's 5th event of the year
up on Lake Champlain. The club launched out of South Bay putting the main lake a fair run to North, even Ticonderoga would take about a 1/2 an hour to get to. The air temperature at start time was just under 60 degrees, and the winds were clam. The competitors scattered, fishing as far north as Chimney Point, and as far South as the back side of South Bay. The water temperatures varied from 76 in the river, and 80 in the backwaters, to as low as 63 degrees up north. The fish were in all different stages, from a typical post spawn pattern, to a mid-Summer pattern in the backwaters, to bedding up North. The river was very murky with the only clear water in very end of South Bay, or all the way back in the backwater areas off of the main river. While the fishing was not easy, the results were good, with everyone weighing in fish, and 9 out of 15 anglers bringing limits to the scales. The winning bag was a 5 Largemouth, 13.25lb limit caught by Rich Degroat. Rich made the farthest run up North, and used a creature bait in weed beds in about 6 feet of water. 2nd Place was a 11.80lb bag weighed in by Darren Smith, and 3rd place was a 10.35lb limit weighed in by Mike Fox. The ³Lunker² for the day was a 3.95lb Largemouth brought in by Rich Degroat. In total, 61 fish were weighed in, all Largemouth, and all were released alive. 1st Bassmastersı next event is on Toronto Reservoir June 24th.
