1st Bassmasters of Sullivan Co. NY fished itšs 6th event of the
season on
Toronto Reservoir this past Sunday. Normally, Toronto is a quality
weight
event, with many anglers breaking double digits, and the average
fish
usually going around 2lbs. This year, the fishing was very tough.
The water
was at least 5 feet below normal, leaving a lot of the structure
where fish
normally relate high and dry. The very cold temperature the night
before,
also contributed to a tough bite, with the air temperature a brisk
39
degrees when we reached the launch. Water temps varied between 69-73
degrees, and the water was clear, and it was a bright sun for most
of the
day. We were further challenged because this year we did not have
permission
from the Iroquois Club to fish their 1/2 of the lake, so we were
left with
the relatively weed free Eastern part of the lake.
There was a bit of controversy regarding the off-limits area. The
majority
of the club used the new green pin buoys as the cut off point, while
a few
boats used the old white buoys, and posted signs, which are
considerably
further back, as the off limits markers. The only problem with this
was that
the anglers who fished past the green pin buoys found much more
active fish,
with the area from the small cove on the right to the island
producing the
only 2 limits, top 2 bags, and the heaviest fish for the day. In the
end the
club decided since it was apparently unclear about where the off
limits area
started, so we really had to count all catches for the day despite
the
inequity of the results.
For the first time since I joined the club in 1999 we had a tie for
1st
Place. Jimmy Mead, and Mike Kreloff both finished with 11:00lb, 5
fish
limits comprised of 1 Smallmouth & 9 Largemouth, so the winner was
decided
by largest fish, with Jimmy edging out Mikešs 2.90lb Largemouth with
a
3.05lb Largemouth which also took Lunker honors for the day. Ollie
Cutler
finished 3rd with 7.50lb bag made up of 3 Smallmouth and 1
Largemouth.
1st Bassmasters next event is on Highland Lake July 15th.
